Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/15 — Overview
The Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/15 delivers professional-grade Maximum Power Point Tracking in a compact form factor suited to smaller solar installations across South Africa. Whether powering a caravan, a load shedding backup system, a small off-grid cabin, or an agricultural remote sensor station, the MPPT 100/15 maximises energy harvest from panels up to 100V Voc and outputs up to 15A of regulated charge current to 12V or 24V batteries.

Built-In Bluetooth for Simple Configuration
Unlike older MPPT controllers that require a separate Bluetooth dongle, the SmartSolar MPPT 100/15 has Bluetooth built in from the factory. The free VictronConnect app (Android and iOS) connects wirelessly within 10–15m, showing real-time solar input voltage, solar power, battery voltage, charge current, and state of charge. Battery charge profiles are set entirely from the app — no rotary switches or PC software required. Thirty days of yield history is stored in the controller and accessible from the app at any time.
Load Output and BatteryLife
The MPPT 100/15 includes a 15A load output terminal that can power DC loads directly from the battery, controlled by the BatteryLife algorithm. BatteryLife prevents battery over-discharge by disconnecting the load when state of charge drops below a programmable threshold and reconnecting when sufficient solar energy has recharged the battery. This extends battery life significantly in off-grid applications where daily solar yield is variable, as is common during winter months in the Cape or during extended cloud cover in Johannesburg.
Application Suitability in South Africa
The MPPT 100/15 is widely used in South Africa for caravan and motorhome roof panel charging, smallholding and farm remote power points, holiday home backup systems where one or two panels supplement a small battery bank during load shedding, and gate motor and borehole pump controller battery charging. Its compact DIN-rail compatible mounting makes it easy to install inside a standard outdoor distribution enclosure.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many solar panels can I connect to the MPPT 100/15?
On a 12V battery system, the MPPT 100/15 accepts up to 200W of panels with a maximum open-circuit voltage of 100V. One 200W panel or two 100W panels in series would be suitable. On 24V, up to 400W of panels is supported — for example, two 200W panels in series with a combined Voc below 100V.
Is the MPPT 100/15 suitable for LiFePO4 batteries?
Yes. The MPPT 100/15 can be configured for LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) batteries via the VictronConnect app by selecting the lithium battery type and setting the appropriate absorption and float voltages. It does not communicate directly with a LiFePO4 BMS but will operate correctly with the correct voltage settings programmed.
Can the MPPT 100/15 charge my battery during load shedding?
Yes. The MPPT 100/15 operates entirely from solar panel power and charges your battery independently of the Eskom grid. It continues to charge during load shedding provided there is adequate sunlight.
What is the difference between the MPPT 100/15 and the MPPT 150/45?
The MPPT 100/15 supports smaller panel arrays (up to 400W on 24V) and a maximum of 15A charge current, making it suitable for smaller battery systems. The MPPT 150/45 supports up to 2,600W on 48V and delivers 45A charge current, making it suited to larger residential or commercial solar installations.

Good quality Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/15 Solar Charge Controller at a fair price. Insulation is thick and uniform, the conductor is pure copper, and the rating matches the label. Our electrician was happy with the quality. Will order from PowerVault again for the next phase of our system.
