Before buying a petrol generator, understand kVA vs kW — generator output is rated in kVA (kilovolt-amperes). At a power factor of 0.8, a 3.5kVA generator delivers approximately 2.8kW of usable power. Add up the wattage of appliances you need to run simultaneously, then choose a generator rated at least 20-25% above that total to avoid overloading.
