What Can a 7kVA Generator Run?
A 7kVA petrol generator outputs approximately 5.6kW of usable power. This is sufficient to power simultaneously all essential household lighting, refrigerator and chest freezer, TV and entertainment system, internet router and computers, microwave, washing machine on a cold wash cycle (no heating element), pool pump (750W–1.5kW) or borehole pump, and power tools in a garage workshop.
The 7kVA handles most residential loads that a 5kVA cannot — particularly motor-driven appliances with high starting surges such as pool pumps, submersible pumps, and compressors.
Key Features at 7kVA
Electric start is mandatory at this size — pull-cord starting at 7kVA is impractical. AVR is important for protecting appliances. Low-oil shutdown prevents engine damage when oil level drops. A fuel gauge is practical for monitoring tank level. Dual-socket outlets are important for distributing loads to different circuits.
Fuel and Runtime
At 50% load (2.8kW draw), a 7kVA petrol generator consumes 1.8–2.5 litres per hour. Most 7kVA models have a 15–25 litre fuel tank, providing 7–12 hours of runtime at moderate load. At full load, fuel consumption rises to 3.0–3.5 litres per hour.
When to Consider Diesel Instead
If your application requires 8 or more hours of daily running, or you are using the generator commercially, a diesel model is more economical in the long term. Diesel fuel has a higher energy density than petrol, resulting in lower fuel consumption per kWh. Diesel engines also last longer under continuous load. For occasional household load shedding use of 2–4 hours per day, petrol is convenient and cost-effective.
Safety — Carbon Monoxide
All petrol generators must be operated outdoors at all times. Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless gas that is produced in significant quantities by all internal combustion engines running on petrol. It accumulates rapidly in enclosed spaces including garages, storerooms, and tents. Multiple South Africans have died from generator-related carbon monoxide poisoning. Operate the generator outdoors with at least 1.5 metres of space on all sides. Never direct the exhaust toward a window, doorway, or occupied building.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Will a 7kVA run a geyser?
A: A standard 3kW electric element geyser is technically within the output of a 7kVA generator. However, running the geyser alongside other loads approaches the generator’s maximum output and is not recommended for extended periods. A better approach is to heat water using a solar geyser and reserve the generator for other circuits.
Q: Can a 7kVA run a small air conditioner?
A: Yes. A 1.5kW split-unit air conditioner can be run on a 7kVA generator alongside other moderate loads. A 2.5kW or larger air conditioner is more marginal — check the starting surge specification and ensure total concurrent load does not exceed the generator’s rated output.
