Hager 63A 2-Pole 30mA RCCB — Overview
The Hager 63A 2-Pole 30mA RCCB is a premium-quality earth leakage circuit breaker for South African residential and light commercial electrical installations. Hager is a European electrical switchgear manufacturer with a long-standing reputation for reliability in the South African market. This RCCB provides class-leading earth fault protection for high-current circuits where combined MCB/RCBO devices are impractical or cost-prohibitive.

Where Is a 63A RCCB Required in South Africa?
SANS 10142-1 (the South African wiring standard) requires earth leakage protection on all socket outlet circuits, including 16A and 20A socket circuits, as well as on circuits supplying swimming pool equipment, garden lighting, EV chargers, and any other outdoor or wet-area loads. A 63A RCCB downstream of a 63A incomer breaker protects the entire distribution board’s circuits. Alternatively, individual 63A RCBOs can protect individual high-current circuits. The 30mA sensitivity is the SANS 10142-1 standard for personal protection against electric shock.
EV Charger Applications
EV charger installations — including the Teltonika TeltoCharge 7.4kW — require a dedicated Type A or Type B 30mA RCCB as specified by IEC 61851-1. A 63A RCCB provides adequate earth leakage protection for a 7.4kW single-phase (32A) EV charger circuit. Type B RCCBs are required for EV chargers that produce smooth DC residual currents. Confirm the type requirement for your specific EV charger with your registered electrician.
Compatibility with South African Distribution Boards
The Hager 63A RCCB is designed to DIN rail mounting standards and is compatible with all major South African distribution board brands including Crabtree, Schneider Electric, ABB, Legrand, and Volta. Standard 35mm DIN rail mounting with 2-module width (36mm). Tin-plated copper busbars accept standard DB busbar connectors.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between an RCCB and an RCBO?
An RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) provides earth leakage protection only and must be used with a separate MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) for overcurrent protection. An RCBO (Residual Current Circuit Breaker with Overcurrent protection) combines both functions in a single device. RCCBs are typically used as a main earth leakage device protecting a group of circuits, while RCBOs protect individual circuits.
Is 30mA sensitivity the correct rating for South African installations?
Yes. SANS 10142-1 specifies 30mA as the maximum residual operating current for personal protection circuits in South Africa. At 30mA, a ground fault through a person’s body is interrupted before the current reaches the 80mA threshold considered dangerous for cardiac fibrillation. Higher sensitivity (10mA) is used in medical locations; lower sensitivity (300mA or 500mA) is used for fire protection on commercial distribution boards.
Does this RCCB protect against overcurrent and short circuits?
No. An RCCB provides earth fault (residual current) protection only. A separate MCB or fuse must be installed upstream of the RCCB to provide overcurrent and short circuit protection. In most South African DB configurations, an MCB is installed on the incomer circuit above the RCCB.
Can this RCCB be used with a three-phase supply?
This is a 2-pole RCCB for single-phase circuits only. For three-phase earth leakage protection, a 4-pole RCCB or three individual single-phase RCCBs are required. Contact PowerVault ZA for 4-pole RCCB options.
