Why Certified Solar PV Cable Is Required
South African SANS 10142-1 requires that all solar PV DC wiring use cable specifically rated and certified for photovoltaic applications. General purpose building cable (such as SANS 61008-rated NYM or standard flex) is not approved for solar PV DC wiring, as it is not rated for 1,500V DC, lacks the UV resistance required for continuous outdoor rooftop exposure, and may not meet the required flame retardancy for roof-mounted cable in proximity to combustible materials. Using non-certified cable in a solar installation will result in a Certificate of Compliance (CoC) not being issued and may affect insurance validity.
6mm2 vs 4mm2: Choosing the Right Cable Size
In South African residential solar installations, 4mm2 PV cable is suitable for string runs up to approximately 6–8 metres where peak string current does not exceed 12–15A. For longer runs, higher-current strings (particularly 600W+ high-Isc panels), or where multiple strings are wired in parallel, 6mm2 cable reduces resistive losses and voltage drop, maintaining system efficiency. For commercial systems with string currents above 15A or runs exceeding 20 metres, 6mm2 or 10mm2 should be used. Always calculate voltage drop as a percentage of string Vmp using cable impedance at operating temperature.
MC4 Connector Compatibility
The 6mm2 cross-section is compatible with MC4-style solar connectors from all major manufacturers, including Staubli MC4, Amphenol H4, and compatible crimp connectors. A 6mm2 MC4 crimping die set is required for terminating connectors onto this cable — do not use 4mm2 dies on 6mm2 cable as this will produce an under-crimped, high-resistance joint. MC4 connectors should be purchased separately and crimped by a qualified solar installer.

For a 4-panel string with 5 metres average distance from panels to inverter, approximately 12–15 metres of each polarity is required per string. Is this cable suitable for underground conduit runs?
The XLPO insulation is suitable for conduit installation and has adequate moisture resistance for conduit runs, but this cable is not rated for direct burial without conduit. For outdoor above-ground cable runs on roof and wall surfaces, UV-stabilised cable clips or conduit should be used to secure and protect the cable.
What is the current carrying capacity of 6mm2 PV cable?
In free air, 6mm2 TUV solar cable typically carries 55A continuously at 40°C ambient temperature. In conduit or when cable is bundled (such as when running multiple strings through the same conduit), the carrying capacity must be derated. For most South African residential string inverter applications where string current does not exceed 15–18A per string, 6mm2 cable has adequate capacity for all routing configurations.
Is this cable suitable for battery DC wiring between the inverter and battery?
No. Battery DC wiring operates at very high currents (often 100A or more at 48V for a 5kW inverter) and requires much larger cross-sections — typically 50mm2 to 95mm2 welding cable or OFC battery cable. 6mm2 PV cable is only suitable for solar string DC wiring (panel to controller or panel to inverter MPPT input) where string currents are typically below 20A.
